Stockton Port

Many people don't think of Stockton, some 90 miles inland, as a port town. Yet since its founding by Capt. Charles M. Weber in 1848, this city has served as one of California's most important ports. Publications in the 1850s stated that "Stockton possesses advantages over all other inland cities of California in that there is sufficient depth and breadth of water, at all seasons of the year, for all purposes of moorage and navigation." Initially, Stockton received ocean-going vessels, but in-filling from hydraulic mining later destroyed this ability, making the port suitable only for flat-bottomed riverboats for a time. During the gold rush, Stockton's waterfront was the supply depot for the southern mines and became a thriving community within a year after its settlement.
